Description

This is a 123 page teaching unit on the novel The Tale of Despereaux. Plus, as a bonus, we've added a 130 page interactive version of this teaching unit! Our lessons go way beyond comprehension questions and vocabulary lists!

Each chapter has a printable page with an activity, writing assignment, or questions that require close reading and critical thinking. Using these handouts, students will examine the author's craft, as well as literary elements such as point of view, setting, foreshadowing, and theme. Along the way, students will also write poems, an essay, a news report, and even a song. The handouts are ready for you to copy and will provide you with a literary focus for each chapter. There are five tests included in this unit, including a test to compare the movie version to the novel and a test solely on the movie.

There is an interactive notebook version of this novel unit included in this package! With interactive notebooks, students are active learners as they cut, fold, glue, and complete the standards-based activities. These activities are the same as the ones included in the other version of our novel unit and will require students to analyze the author’s craft and literary elements such as setting, symbolism, characterization, and plot. If you do not use interactive notebooks, you can still use these activities. Students can keep them in a binder or even in a folder! Answer keys are included for each handout. Everything is ready for you to teach. We are extremely excited about including this bonus interactive option! Completing novels using interactive notebooking is awesome because students are active, and they love it! Once the unit is finished, students can use the notebook as a reference. Literary terms and opportunities for analysis of these devices are provided throughout the unit. The best part is that once you purchase this unit, you can reuse it every year!
