Description

Effective literacy centers in the middle school classroom allow students to collaborate and learn in a fun, meaningful, and engaging way. This resource includes ten fun and engaging centers! We provide you with different ideas on how to use centers in your classroom as well as several checklists that can be used to assess the work completed in centers.

There is a chart listing the CCSS for each center! The following ten centers are included in this resource:

Argue Your Point Center – In this center, students will choose a task card that has an argumentative prompt. Students will make claims, analyze counterarguments, and support claims with facts and details. There are twenty prompts provided. We also include an editable template for you to add more.

Creative Writing Center – In this center, students will write creative descriptions of settings and characters. We provide 19 characters and 19 locations for students to create. So, they will write at least 38 paragraphs in this center. This is a fun center that students enjoy!

Expository Writing Would You Rather Center – Most kids are familiar with the Would You Rather scenario game. In this center, students complete a short expository paragraph while having fun thinking through a fun would you rather question. We provide 10 would you rather questions and also include an editable template for you to add more of your own. A research component is also involved at this center!

Extreme Makeover Writing Edition Center – This center houses different essays and stories. Either in a group or individually, students will revise these essays and stories giving them an extreme makeover! Fourteen editable essays are provided.

Fun With Fables Center – Everyone loves fables. They are interesting, short, and teach valuable lessons. In this center, students will use fables to practice using context clues and identifying and analyzing theme. There are Students will also complete a creative activity with the twenty-one fables provided!

Informational Text Time Center – This station will be filled with articles from magazines and the Internet. Our package does not contain the articles, but we do provide an informational text analysis worksheet that provides fun and meaningful activities to complete after reading the text. We also provide websites that provide great articles that can be used in this center.

Poetry Fun Center – This center is all about writing poetry! Task cards are complete with clear directions, poetry formats, and examples. Fourteen task cards are included. This center is guaranteed to be one of the favorites!

Quote Analysis Center – This center has 50 ready-to-print quotes. Students will choose one, and use the quote analysis sheet to explain it. Then, they will illustrate it.An editable template is included for you to add more quotes.

Strong Verb Paragraph Center – This center explains how to write “strong verb paragraphs”, an exercise which focuses on word choice! An example is included as well as 20 strong verb task cards. A blank card is included so that you can add even more!

Vocabulary Memory Center – This center is very fun, and is guaranteed to help students learn new words! Vocabulary cards are included which contain a word, definition, and mnemonic story to help students remember the word. Students will complete a worksheet using one of these cards and then create their own vocabulary cards by coming up with their own mnemonic devices! This center will be a hit!

Each center is complete with printable cover pages, directions, frequently asked questions about directions, pictures of our “centers inside binders”, and worksheets or task cards needed.

There are lots of ways to organize centers in your classroom. You can pick a spot in your room for each center, or make your centers mobile by placing the needed supplies in a folder, bag, plastic box, or basket. You can use centers at times when you need to work with groups or individuals, such as during guided reading. Or, you can simply choose a day of the week,(Fun Fridays) and let students rotate through the centers during that class period. Centers are perfect for early finish work as well!
